The Satire Strikes Back

from Showpeople, The Stage, 15th November 2001

Making an impression – Jessica Sims

'It was the hardest – or scariest – audition of my life – all improvisation and impersonations. It's really got a style of its own. Newsrevue is raw but I'd definitely recommend it.'

Jessica Sims, who graudated 18 months ago from the University of Warwick with a degree in Theatre and Performance Studies and has had classical voice training for over seven years, is one of a four-strong cast at the Canal Café in London.

In Newsrevue, a collection of 20 writers contribute topical gags. The cast and director then select and try what might work best. But the cast also has input in the show – which has a six-week run until November 26th when a new cast enters – and the material is changed every week.

Jessica explains: 'It's Harry Potter this week. I've written a sketch about Patsy Palmer and a song about the NHS. You find yourself reading through the papers, frantically thinking. I've just written a song about John Prescott and Tony Blair having a fight. I've written it in anticipation – I'm really hoping.'

Despite doing drama, voiceovers, musicals and pantomime, Jessica says: 'My long term plan is to go into opera.' She has just landed a role in Fozel Theatre Company's tour of A Winter’s Song.
